Twenty years of keeping Twin Cities homes comfortable

Erik Lindqvist started Northwind in 2006 after a decade on other companies' service trucks, convinced that homeowners deserved a technician who would explain the problem instead of just quoting a part. That idea built the company, and it still runs it.

How Northwind started

Erik Lindqvist spent the first ten years of his career on service trucks for two different Twin Cities contractors, and he kept running into the same problem: he was sent to sell, not to fix. Homeowners with a failed igniter were being quoted new furnaces. Customers with a slow refrigerant leak were being told their air conditioner was “about done.” He started Northwind in 2006 out of a rented garage bay in Bloomington with one van and a promise to himself that every diagnosis would be honest, even when the honest answer was a cheap one.

The first winter had a stretch of nights near thirty below, and the phone did not stop ringing. Those early no-heat calls, many from homeowners whose regular company had sent them to voicemail, built the reputation the company still runs on.

Northwind today

The shop on Lyndale Avenue now runs a fleet of service and installation trucks across Hennepin, Dakota, Scott and Ramsey counties. The work has broadened beyond gas furnaces and central air into cold-climate heat pumps, ductless systems for older homes, boiler service, and the air-quality equipment that tightly built Minnesota houses need. Dana Okafor runs the service side and Mike Halvorsen runs replacements, and a good share of each year’s work comes from customers who have been with us for a decade or more.

What has not changed

Erik still takes no-heat calls on the worst nights. Every technician still shows the customer what failed before quoting the repair. Every replacement still gets a load calculation and a permit. And we still turn down jobs when a homeowner is being pushed toward equipment they do not need.

How we work

Say what we found

Every service visit ends with the technician showing you the failed part, the reading on the meter, or the crack in the heat exchanger. You should never have to take our word for it.

Size it properly

A load calculation on every replacement, every time. It takes an extra hour and it is the difference between a system that runs comfortably for twenty years and one that short-cycles from the first winter.

Stand behind it

Two years of labor coverage on repairs and ten on installations. If something we did fails, the return visit is on us.

Be there when it is cold

A furnace company that is closed on the coldest night of the year is not much of a furnace company. Ours is open.

Furnace acting up? Don't wait for the cold snap.

A no-pressure visit from a technician who will tell you whether it's a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all. If your system is fine, we'll say so.
